Panthenol

INCI: Panthenol · also provitamin B5, dexpanthenol, D-panthenol

The alcohol form of pantothenic acid, vitamin B5. Small enough to penetrate both skin and the hair cortex, which is unusual for a hydrating ingredient and is most of why it is in everything.

Why it is here

Provitamin B5, small enough to get inside the hair shaft. The dependable part, which every formula needs and nobody writes songs about.

In skin, panthenol converts to pantothenic acid, a component of coenzyme A, which catalyzes early steps in fatty acid and sphingolipid synthesis. That is the mechanistic link to barrier lipids. In hair the story is physical rather than metabolic: labeled panthenol penetrates into the cortical protein regions and forms hydrogen bonds with hair proteins, which is the proposed source of measured tensile strength changes.

The receipts

  1. NanoSIMS imaging showed deuterium-labeled panthenol penetrating into cortical protein regions of hair, solid-state NMR showed direct interaction between panthenol and protein aromatic side chains, and treated hair had higher break stress and elastic modulus than control hair.

Strengthening benefits of panthenol for hair: mechanistic evidence from advanced spectroscopic techniques. International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2026. in vitro. PMID 40905518

  2. A dexpanthenol cream significantly accelerated skin barrier repair versus vehicle and untreated skin after sodium lauryl sulfate irritation, significantly increased stratum corneum hydration more than vehicle, and significantly reduced redness where the vehicle produced no effect.

Dexpanthenol enhances skin barrier repair and reduces inflammation after sodium lauryl sulphate-induced irritation. Journal of Dermatological Treatment, 2002. controlled human study, n = human volunteers, patch-test irritation model. PMID 19753737

In practice

Typical use
0.5 to 5 percent, most commonly 1 to 2 percent in both hair and skin products. There is no single studied level for hair.
Keep apart from
Nothing meaningful. Panthenol is compatible across the pH range cosmetics operate in and is one of the least reactive ingredients in the category.
Cautions
Contact allergy to panthenol is rare but documented, including one report of contact urticaria from a hair conditioner. Otherwise none notable, including in pregnancy.

Questions people ask

Does panthenol actually strengthen hair?

The 2026 spectroscopy work found it penetrates into the cortical protein regions, hydrogen bonds with hair proteins, and raises break stress and elastic modulus in treated fibers. That is laboratory tensile testing, not a consumer trial, and the study was run by the ingredient's largest user. Real mechanistic evidence, appropriately labeled as mechanistic.

Is panthenol the same as vitamin B5?

It is the provitamin. Panthenol converts in tissue to pantothenic acid, which is vitamin B5 proper and a building block of coenzyme A. The alcohol form is used topically because it is more stable and penetrates better than the acid. Swallowing B5 and applying panthenol are different interventions with different evidence.

Why is panthenol in the interesting tier?

Because the strong human evidence is for skin, not hair. The dexpanthenol barrier repair trial is a proper human study, but Human Condition is a conditioner. The hair evidence is instrumental: penetration imaging and tensile testing in a laboratory. Both are real. Only one of them is about the use we are putting it to.
