Jojoba Beads
INCI: Jojoba Esters · also jojoba wax beads, Simmondsia chinensis esters, jojoba spheres
Small colored spheres of hardened jojoba wax suspended in the cleanser. They are there because they look good, and because they melt on contact rather than scratch.
Why it is here
They are there because they look good. That is allowed. Jojoba wax does have a literature of its own, as an emollient with anti-inflammatory activity, but be clear: the receipt is for the wax, not for the beads.
Jojoba is a liquid wax rather than an oil, made of long-chain esters, chemically closer to what human sebum contains than to a triglyceride vegetable oil. Hydrogenating it produces a solid that can be shaped into beads, which soften at skin temperature and disperse into the wash rather than abrading the surface.
The receipt
The review reports anti-inflammatory activity for jojoba and roles in skin infections, skin aging, wound healing, sunscreens and moisturizers, and notes it enhances absorption of topical drugs.

- Outcome
- Anti-inflammatory activity; roles in moisturizers, wound healing and skin aging
In practice
- Typical use
- 0.1 to 1 percent by weight in a clear or translucent cleanser, purely as suspended visual interest. Above that they start to feel gritty, which defeats the point.
- Pairs with
- Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Glycerin, Wax Esters
- Keep apart from
- Physical scrub particles: doubling up on abrasion in a cleanser is how people talk themselves into over-exfoliating. The beads here are not a scrub and should not be used as one.
- Cautions
- None notable. If you are looking for exfoliation, this is not it. Do not press harder to make them do something they were not made to do.
Questions people ask
Do jojoba beads exfoliate?
Not meaningfully, and that is deliberate. They soften at skin temperature and break down during the wash instead of scraping. The receipt in the literature is for jojoba wax as an emollient with anti-inflammatory activity, not for beads as an exfoliant. If you want exfoliation, use an acid or a dedicated tool, and use it on purpose.
Are jojoba beads a microplastic?
No. They are hydrogenated jojoba wax, a plant-derived ester that biodegrades. They were adopted across the industry specifically as a replacement for polyethylene microbeads, which are persistent plastic and are now banned in rinse-off products in many jurisdictions.
Why include something that does nothing?
Because pleasure is a real reason and pretending otherwise is how skincare got dishonest. The beads are catalogued here in the sensory tier, which means we are telling you they are there for the look and the feel. The claim we are making is that they are beautiful. That claim is true.
